Four of the five members of the Gloucester High School Junior ROTC rifle team have qualified for a national competition at Fort Benning, Ga., in February.

Each of the four qualified for the Eastern Championship round last year and two have qualified several times in the past. Michael Thoma placed first in the First Marine District, Selina Clancy placed fifth, Melissa Strangman placed eighth and Christopher Lane placed 10th.   Read more »

The 2006 graduates of GHS are now, hopefully, happily ensconced in their appropriate places of higher learning & are enjoying their freshman year! Their college/university selections have ranged from community, state & technical colleges to Ivy League universities. Oftentimes, the family’s financial circumstances & the potential for grants, loans, & scholarships dictate where the students apply & what schools they choose to attend.   Read more »

A string quartet from Gordon College performed at O'Maley Middle School library for Gloucester music students yesterday in an effort to revive an interest in string ensembles that has been dormant for more than 15 years in Gloucester.Four musicians from the Wenham college gave an hourlong performance, playing five classical pieces followed by a question period for the students and their parents.   Read more »

President of the GHS Class of 1957

Tom, as he was known by his classmates, was born in Gloucester in 1939. He studied piano with Florence Reynolds and Don Oaks, and saxophone and clarinet with Antonio “Tony” Gentile and Andy Jacobson while playing in the GHS ROTC marching band. While at GHS he also played saxophone in the “Modernaires,” a local dance band in which his brother Peter (GHS 1955) played piano. Tom subsequently formed his own big band, made up of GHS musicians, and he led smaller groups that played at local dances and weddings.   Read more »

The Gloucester Education Foundation received a $6,000 grant from NASA to boost robotics instruction at the high school.

With the grant from a NASA program called the Robotics Alliance Project, John Chiffer and Kurt Lichtenwald, science teachers at Gloucester High School, will form a team of students to build a robot to complete a certain task assigned by NASA in competition with other schools in the region. None of the participating schools around the country knows what that task will be until January.   Read more »
