GLOUCESTER — Benjamin A. "Bennie" Chianciola, 81, husband of I. Rose (Lovell) Chianciola, of Gloucester, died on Friday afternoon, April 4, 2008 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Gloucester on Sept. 10, 1926, son of the late Bartolo and Marie Antionette (Frontiero) Chianciola.
Bennie was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1946.
He had worked as fisherman out of Gloucester aboard the Serafina II as an engineer almost his whole life. His courage while working at sea had earned him the Gloucester Mariner's Medal awarded in 1967 and also the Silver Life Saving Medal from the U.S. Coast Guard. After retiring from fishing, Bennie had worked as a security guard at the Addison Gilbert Hospital for 10 years.
In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, painting, stain glass art, gardening and loved to bake. Bennie was an avid Celtics and Red Sox fan and was thrilled to watch the Sox win two World Series.
Bennie was a long-time member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks and St. Peter's Club.
Bennie was a very kind man who loved the time he had with his family and many friends.
In addition to his wife Rose, he is survived by his three daughters, Sally D'Antonio and husband Benedict, Marie Telles and husband David, all of Gloucester, Julie Chianciola of Beverly; his son, Walter S. Chianciola and wife Sharon of Gloucester; grandchildren, Michael D'Antonio and wife Alicia of Haverhill, Melissa D'Antonio, Eric, Kristen and Abbie Telles, Lauren and Kiley Chianciola, all of Gloucester; two great-grandchildren, Maddie and Henry D'Antonio; his brother, Walter D. Chianciola and wife Constance of Gloucester; a sister-in-law, Sally Ramsey and her husband Vern of Edgewater, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Raymond Lovell and his wife Liz of Akron, Ohio; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
