Donald H. Lowe

PALM COAST, Fla. — Former Mayor, the Honorable Donald H. Lowe, 81, of Palm Coast, Fla., formerly of Gloucester, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Born Nov. 18, 1927 in Gloucester to Mr. Charles H. Lowe and Mrs. Olive Lowe. Married on Sept. 19, 1948 in the Union Congregational Church in Magnolia to Isabel G. Shields.

Donald graduated from Gloucester High School, where he played football and basketball and as a top 10 member of his graduating class was a recipient of the Sawyer Medal. He continued his education in the building industry by taking correspondence courses to advance his education to be a professional tradesman. He started his own building company "Don Lowe Builders" to build quality homes of distinction that people could be proud to own; he wanted to build a home, not just a house. He built many homes for people both in Massachusetts and in Florida.

Before relocating to Florida, Donald served three terms as a councilman for Gloucester starting in 1961 and in the mid 1960s became the Mayor. As Mayor, he also served as chairman of the School Committee. He was a lifelong member of the Lions Club receiving the perfect attendance for the past 10 years, lending his hand to paper and white cane drives. He was a founding member of the Flagler County - Palm Cost Florida Home Builders Association.

Donald resided in Magnolia, Kennebunk, Maine and Palm Coast, Fla. He loved the game of football and always rooted for the New England Patriots. He also did wood crafts and enjoyed being active playing golf and doing odd jobs that kept his hands into handyman activities. As a young man, Donald also enjoyed water skiing, making ski jumps in Magnolia Harbor, scaring the local creatures and family with daring do on the water skis.

He is survived by his wife Isabel of Palm Coast, Fla.; three sons, Donald H. Lowe Jr. and his wife Anne Gloucester, Richard K. Lowe and Alan Lowe of Palm Coast; grandchildren, Richard K. Lowe Jr., Justin M. Lowe, Donald H. Lowe III, John S. Lowe, Alan M. Lowe, Joshua A. Lowe; and great-grandchild, Noah Lowe.
